Pre K with an edge. I Explore is a 3500 square foot gallery devoted to the Pre-K audience and opened as part of Liberty Science Center’s expansion in 2007. S2 was contracted by LSC to lead the design, development and prototyping of the exhibit. Dan Wodarcyk and Dan Cieloha, of CDC Evaluation and Development, are developing this exhibit in collaboration. S2 also assisted in managing the fabrication and installation.
The exhibit is geared toward 0 to 5 year olds, with an emphasis on “Myself.” Where do I Live? What Can I Do? Who Am I? We constantly make connections to the local, urban environment which the science center is located. The basic elements of scientific inquiry have guided the selection of each exhibit experience. Many concepts were explored during conceptual design and currently we are finishing detailed design development drawings.
Some experiences include a scale version of the Verrazzano Bridge with bridge and tower building experiences. “Slice of Street” allows visitors a crawl through experience for exploring what inhabits the spaces directly beneath the sidewalk under their feet. Local animals (rats to be exact) and insects are embedded throughout the exhibit space. For the smallest visitors, a semi enclosed space called “Day into Night” acts as a quiet contemplative space with crawl activities, where the lighting levels change and cycle as if it were the course of a day.
